  • Contrary to popular belief, goldfish (comets, lionheads, fantails, telescope, and more) should not be placed in bowls. The environmental requirements for goldfish are NOT met in a bowl and will cause the premature death of your fish. Goldfish should not be placed in a community tank, or any tank with live plants as they will see the vegetation as an invitation to a delicious meal. While Goldfish are omnivores they will not actively pursue other fish in your tank, however, they will not hesitate to eat any of their deceased brethren. It is important to note that while there are many aquariums that are too small for goldfish, you can never go "too big". The reason Goldfish require such a big aquarium is because they are fish that produce a lot of waste (which later becomes ammonia). Your filter will NOT be able to keep up with your fish if your fish is in an aquarium that is too small for it.
