Brackish Banded Archerfish

The banded archerfish (Toxotes jaculatrix) is a species of fish found in brackish and freshwater habitats in Southeast Asia, from India to Indonesia. These fish are known for their unique hunting technique, which involves shooting down prey by spitting a jet of water at insects or small animals perched on vegetation above the water's surface. Banded archerfish have a long, slender body and can grow up to 30 cm (12 in) in length. They are silvery-green in color with several dark vertical bands along their sides, which help to camouflage them in their natural environment. They have a protruding lower jaw and a narrow mouth that allows them to precisely aim their water jets at prey.

The hunting technique of the banded archerfish is impressive and has been studied extensively. These fish have the ability to shoot a powerful jet of water at a distance of up to two meters (six feet) to knock down prey from overhanging vegetation. They are also able to adjust the angle of their shot depending on the location of the prey. Banded archerfish are omnivorous and feed on a variety of insects, crustaceans, and small fish. They are popular among aquarists due to their unique appearance and interesting behavior. In captivity, they should be provided with a varied diet that includes live or frozen food to mimic their natural feeding habits.
